Wes Anderson's films are well known for his unusual construction of characters. A lot of publicity was given to "Rushmore" and recieved nominations from various awards ceremonies. From watching the opening 20 minutes, the film could perhaps be seen as portraying Wes Anderson's views of society through his characters. For example, Bill Murray plays the president of the school and gives a speech in the early stages of the film explaining how the rich students will forever be in private education and that the more average students will have to fight for their place by "taking down the rich". The main character Max is developed througout the film. He is first filmed from behind showing little of his appearance. It seems that he is a typical "nerd" in the classroom until the audience realise the scene is but a dream.
From watching the film it has added to my knowledge and ideas towards making my film. I could -
- Base my main character around teenager who socially struggles with little confidence, finding it difficult to fit in.
- Use conventions of the comedy used in Rushmore.
- Use conventions of the high school (how the buildings are shot etc).
- Change the classic high school genre structure.
